I-20表格是用来获得一个 f - 1签证 and must be in the possession of the student at the time of entry into the U.S. To student must also pay the I-901 (SEVIS) fee prior to applying for the visa. 要支付I-901费用，请到 U.S. 入境及海关 网站. 目前这个费用是350美元. The I-20 form is dated for the period of time normally required to complete the specified program.

As an international student, you are generally not permitted to work off-campus. 你可能 be employed on-campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week while courses are in session, 还有每周40小时的正式学校休息时间.

*Government sponsored students may not work on-campus as mandated by their program.

F-1 students may apply to Optional Practical Training (选择) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT) to engage in off campus work in some circumstances.  在开始任何校外有偿或无偿工作之前, F-1 students must obtain prior and specific work authorization from the Associate Director, 国际学生服务和参与以及美国移民局. Off-campus employment cannot begin without possession of the proper documents; a CPT authorized I-20 form or the 选择 EAD card.

If you are graduating from a bachelor’s or master’s program at North Central and have been in F-1 status for at least one academic year, you may apply for 选择 no sooner than 90 days before and no later than 60天 after your program end date. 选择就业 必须与你的专业领域有关 并且可能持续长达12个月. 在某些情况下, STEM students may apply for an 选择 extension in which they may be employed an additional 12 months.

应用ing for 选择 costs $410 and must be done through SEVIS and with guidance from the Associate Director, 国际学生服务和参与. 每学期将举办一次选择研讨会. Any students interested in applying for 选择 must attend this workshop and make an individual appointment with the Associate Director, 国际学生服务和参与 to go over the application.

CPT

Allows eligible F-1 students to earn required course credit while completing an off-campus employment opportunity, 比如实习.

Enrollment in a required internship/elective course is mandatory for CPT authorization. The employment must be an integral part of an established curriculum and be directly related to the student’s major field of study.

CPT不是为长期连续工作而设计的. Please note that partaking in 12 months or more of CPT prohibits you from participating in 选择.

  • J-1 students may remain in the United States for up to 30 days after their exchange program has come to an end. 你可能 not work during this period and you cannot depart and reenter the country.
  • F-1 students may take up to 60天 after their program end date to depart the country. 你可能 not work during this period and cannot depart and reenter the country.
  • F-1 students may also apply for another program at North Central or enroll in an academic program at another U.S. 大学.
  • F-1 students may work in their field of study, if authorized with 选择, as discussed above.

Remember to keep your passport valid for a minimum of 6 months into the future.

Any international student present in the United States for any amount of time must file tax documents, 即使你不工作.
